The Need

The Need

Hendersonville Samaritan Association has out-grown its current location. The volunteer Board of community members and staff continue to add services and develop new and more effective means to serve the community.

The HSA Mission Center moved to its current rented space at 126 Commerce Drive in 2000. Since moving into the current 6,800 square foot building, services have increased by thirty percent. Now, HSA is faced with in inadequate space for sorting, storing and managing food collections, clothing and thrift store donations. Limited parking for customers and clients is a serious issue.

In 2005, more than 1,400 families were served at the current location making the need to expand imperative.

Good Stewardship
Each year, seventy percent of the HSA operating budget is earned through thrift store sales. The other thirty percent is raised through annual giving by generous donors and other fund-raising activities.

Rent for the current location is a major expense. Building a new facility will empower HSA to become debt free by using the $3,000 per month in rent to pay off a short-term mortgage. Once the mortgage is paid off, these funds will then be used to expand services

The Building Campaign
In 2005, the Board approved the purchase of a two-acre site near the current location. The construction of a new Samaritan Center to serve our growing community is the goal of this capital campaign. The new center will give HSA 10,000 square feet of space specifically designed for HSA services. An additional 3,000 square feet of short term leased space will generate income for debt reduction in the interim and offer space for future expansion.

The new Samaritan Center will include:

  • a new Thrift Store doubling the size of this ministry (provides 70% of HSA's operating budget)
  • 51 parking spaces offering an invitation to clients and customers
  • increased storage space providing space to meet critical receiving and sorting challenges
  • a new refrigeration area enabling more efficient food management and distribution
  • 2 additional offices expanding administrative space to take applications and provide for growth
  • a new Conference Room expanding space for Board Meetings now held off campus and other community activities.
